Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

Sony’s liquid-loving Xperia Z just got a bit of extra competition: Samsung just announced a waterproof version of the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 Active shares many specifications with the regular model: a Full HD 1,920×1,080-pixel five-inch display, a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, two-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and the same 2,600mAh battery.

There are some sacrifices: the rear-facing camera has been dropped from 13-megapixels to eight-megapixels, but it’s compensated for with an “Aqua Mode”, which promises to make underwater photos a little clearer.

Screen technology is different as well: leaving the ultra-vibrancy of Samsung’s Super Amoled to the regular model, the S4 Active has a TFT LCD screen. Although overall picture sharpness for photos and text is likely to be the same, colours may lack the bright contrasts the Galaxy range is known for.

The phone is a little larger, notably in depth: the S4 Active is 1.2mm thicker than the S4. It’s also just over 20g heavier.

But with this version you can take it underwater and keep it there for half an hour while snapping pictures. It’s also dustproof, for use in the desert. Or festivals. The headphone socket is also sealed, so if you get a pair of waterproof headphones you can take the phone swimming while listening to Spotify, for example.

A more day-to-day benefit: reading messages in the bath without worrying about dropping it in the water, or replying to an email in the shower.

The S4 Active is just one variant of the regular S4; Google recently showed off another version of Samsung’s device, which lacked Samsung’s TouchWiz Android interface. Then there’s the S4 Mini, which shares the product’s name but is actually a lower-powered device.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has a UK release date of “this summer”.
